Clifford Bunn is a visual artist based in Georgetown, Texas. In 1996 Clifford joined the Oakland Police Department in California where he awarded numerous awards including “Officer of the Year – Runner Up” in 2007. He retired from the Oakland Police Department in 2014 after a distinguished career.
In June of 2011, he experienced a parent’s worst nightmare with the loss of his beloved 16-year-old son Tyler to suicide. Out of this loss and grief, Clifford re-discovered his creative spirit, initially as a form of therapy and healing. In 2014, He relocated to the Austin metropolitan area, and was accepted into the Studio Art program at the University of Texas at Austin. Clifford received his Bachelor of Fine degree in Studio Art in December of 2020, with an emphasis in painting and sculpture. Clifford was also nominated for outstanding painter at the conclusion of his final year at the University of Texas.
Currently, Clifford current body of work addresses such issues of social justice, inequities, mental health awareness, women’s reproductive rights. Clifford uses iconic African American symbols, and text recontextualized with depictions of black curly hair using oil paint, cold wax, and wood shavings. Clifford’s art practice also focuses on figurative paintings and creates large portraits of iconic African American boxers who observed the slings and arrows of racism, yet persevered and prospered.
